What does BMR and BMI mean?

BMR = Basal Metabolic Rate.  The number of Calories your body burns in one day if you were still and didn’t move. The more muscular you are, the higher your BMR as your muscle mass takes energy just to stay alive. Arnold Schwarzenegger would have a much higher BMR than Kylie Minogue, just like a truck idling burns more fuel than a small car.

BMI = Body Mass Index.  This is a calculation used to give you feedback about your general body composition, and whether you fall in the underweight, normal, overweight or obese category. The calculation is your body weight divided by the square of your height.  For most people it is a good guide to refer to, to see if your body composition is in the healthy range.  However for athletes, children, the elderly, Aboriginals, Torres Strait Islanders and the Asian population it is not a particularly accurate indicator.
